Adult & Children Formation

Catechumenate, starting Jan. 19, 2012

Our Christian Formation classes meet at 10 a.m. each Sunday in the basement of the Parish House. Visitors and newcomers are always welcome! If you’d like more information about our ministry before you visit, please contact The Rev. Canon Cathy Gray at 317-636-4577 or cathyg@cccindy.org

Stories from our Christian tradition are being told and heard and pondered from many perspectives and are being given new life through outreach activities, art, and prayer.

Are you curious about faith? about God?
Do you have questions that seem to get in the way?

Your questions are not in the way. Your questions are the way.

Explore those questions in the context of a community of conversation and sharing.

Discover that God has always been found not in having the right answer key but among a community of disciples who ask these questions of each other.

At this table, God will be present.

The Catechumenate (cat – he- CUE – men – it) is
a weekly gathering in the Winter and Spring
for those who want to explore mature, adult faith
in the context of open and gracious conversation.
The word Catechumenate describes an ancient process in the early Church by which people came to faith. It was a process that relied on questioning.

We still rely on questioning, but today question-asking is a two-way street.

Questions are welcome. Conversation is the norm.
Everything is on the table. Spiritual growth is the goal.

For some, this process will result in a new faith commitment such as getting baptized or confirmed.
Others will use this class to become a member of our community. No such commitment is required to participate. If you want to explore faith deeply, you are welcome.

Conversation will be facilitated by Stephen Carlsen,
the Dean (senior pastor) of Christ  Church Cathedral, and by other clergy of the Cathedral.

The program is intended for:

  • newcomers to the Church who have never been baptized,
  • newcomers who have been members of another Christian community and are now considering calling Christ Church Cathedral and the Episcopal Church their home, and
  • longtime members of the Cathedral who would like a refresher in the basics of the faith as part of a reevaluation or renewal of their spiritual lives.
