Critically acclaimed as a “vivacious and flexible director of voices” (Choir & Organ, UK) and “an energetic and persuasive conductor” (Los Angeles Times), Dr. Dana Marsh has served as Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis since August 2010. Previously, he was Director of Chapel Music at Girton College, University of Cambridge (UK), where he led the college’s prize-winning chapel choir in weekly liturgies and on international concert tours. Marsh was trained as a boy chorister at St. Thomas Choir School in New York (under Gerre Hancock) and at Salisbury Cathedral in England. He was organ scholar at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle, learning under Peter Hallock. He earned his undergraduate degree at the Eastman School of Music, studying with David Craighead. He was Director of the Paulist Boy Choristers of California, and later founded the early music ensemble, Musica Humana Oxford (UK). A respected academic, Marsh took his doctorate in historical musicology at the University of Oxford, England. He taught Medieval and Renaissance music history at both Oxford and Cambridge universities and has published articles through the scholarly presses of both institutions.
Cited by the New York Times as “a powerful and expressive countertenor,” Marsh performed regularly as a vocal soloist (1992-2003), with the American Bach Soloists, the New York Collegium under Gustav Leonhardt, the Concert Royal, the Choir of St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, the L.A. Bach Festival, the San Francisco Bach Choir, the Choir of New College Oxford and the Academy of Ancient Music. He has also performed at the Berkeley Festival, the Getty Center, and at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. He was a member of the Choir of New College Oxford (2001–08), singing 150 services per year, numerous radio broadcasts, 15 discs and 25 international concert tours with that ensemble. Marsh has conducted the London Mozart Players, the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra of Los Angeles, and the City of Oxford Orchestra. As a choral conductor, he has collaborated with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Antonio Pappano. He has recorded variously for Universal, Naxos, Sony, Signum, Erato, Decca, Avie, RCM, CRD and Koch International Classics. He looks forward to building further on the strong musical tradition at Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis.
