Christ Church Cathedral heartily encourages individuals and parishes to join lay ministers across the diocese to rebuild a church campus in Haiti. While the Episcopal Relief and Development is working on relief efforts in Haiti (food, housing, emergency aid), Episcopal churches across the country are being asked to contribute to rebuilding churches, rectories, and their schools. Haiti is the largest diocese of The Episcopal Church, and the Leogane region, at the earthquake epicenter, is home to some of the Episcopal Church’s most vital Haitian congregations.

Cathedral Missions Co-Chair Audrey McFarland, Linda O’Neill, Don Doucette, The Very Rev. Stephen Carlsen, The Very Rev. Andrew Klatte and Canon Rees Olander, along with the Rev. Karen King of Trinity Church, Indianapolis, were part of the 200 persons who gathered in Miami for “Haiti Connection” conference Nov. 3-5. The Diocese of Indianapolis, with a $20,000 challenge grant from the Cathedral, is beginning a partnership with the mission of St. Andre, Mithon in Leogane, Haiti and its vicar Pere Samuel St. Louis.
Bishop Jean-Zache Duracin and Pere Kesner Ajax, Partnership Coordinator, revealed an ambitious master plan for the “Reconstruction and Development of the Diocese of Haiti.” The master plan calls first for the rebuilding of Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. The Connections conference also heard a broad vision for rebuilding church communities, education, mental and physical health, and agriculture in ways that decrease aid dependency and allow Haitian communities to grow in self-sufficiency. Again and again, Haitian leaders asked American partners to support them in new ways that fostered diocesan coordination and independence. This will call for some shifts in American mission style, along with greater financial resources and patience.
Following the conference, part of the Indianapolis group flew on to Haiti to meet their new Haitian partners. Theirs was the first plane to land after a recent hurricane. During the Diocesan Convention in October, Dean Stephen Carlsen announced the Cathedral’s one-year challenge grant of $20,000 for Haiti with Bishop Waynick’s blessing. While the Cathedral has provided volunteers, staff and background trips to initiate the partnership, this is to be a true Diocese of Indianapolis effort, with the Global Missions committee at the heart of decisions for this new diocese-to-Haitian parish partnership.
