Asking God for What We Need

This Sunday, we’ll encounter the fascinating parable of the unjust judge that Jesus teaches to his disciples in Luke 18. In a nutshell, his parable goes like this: a widow is literally kicked to the curb, likely by her dead husband’s family. She tries to plead her case before a community judge, who ignores her early requests for help, but who finally gives in because of her relentless pestering. Jesus contrasts God with the unjust judge, noting that, unlike a judge, God is always ready to listen to us and our cries for help, and God needs no pestering.

In my 22 years as a pastor and priest, I’m always still surprised and saddened when someone tells me they don’t feel worthy to ask God for something. I’m always heartbroken when I hear: “God is too busy for me,” or “I’m not worthy to ask God for this,” or “I’m just being selfish….what about all the people in the world who face (war/cancer/poverty/hunger)….”

This month, as our Cathedral community reflects on our stewardship theme of growing Deeper Roots, it’s important to note that this season of reflection isn’t just about congregational giving. It is also about understanding our interdependence within the church community and our total dependence on God. Like roots of a flourishing tree that find sources of abundant water, God wants to be in relationship with us. God wants us to ask God and each other for what we need. May the faithful widow teach us that in asking, we shall easily receive. In seeking, we will easily find.

—The Very Reverend Gray Lesesne, D.Min.

Deeper Roots

SUNDAY, OCT. 14, AFTER EACH SERVICE

During stewardship month, we’re reflecting on how we will deepen our roots in God’s love and hope by praying together, learning together, serving together, and giving together for the work of God’s Kingdom. Sunday, you’ll hear from a member of our Vestry and how CCC is shaping their spiritual life. We’ll also welcome Immigrant Welcome Center, one of our three Outreach Ministry Partners, to share more about their mission and the impact of our giving. Be sure to join us in the Parish Hall after each service to learn more about Immigrant Welcome Center and what is in store for our ongoing work together!
