The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Jesus has a way of getting right to the heart of things in his parables, and this Sunday’s is no exception. His story of how the Pharisee and the tax collector regard themselves and others before God in prayer is a piercing diagnosis of human nature—but also a story about righteousness and justification. We have all been one or the other of these characters from Christ’s parable. Sometimes we are the Pharisee—so thankful we are not like those other silly, rude, racist, or unintelligent fools who are a nuisance to our lives. But other times maybe we’ve felt like the tax collector—unworthy, even fearful of approaching God’s presence in prayer because of the ways in which we’ve fallen short in our lives. The first stance will always lead us to more misery and unhappiness because it is based in our own self-righteousness. But what the tax collector demonstrates is a trust that, no matter his shortcomings, God’s righteousness is unlimited, and justifies even the most notorious sinners—even, perhaps, the Pharisee too. If we can dwell in this good news, make roots in this grace, then our lives will be transformed.

Deeper Roots

We’ll also welcome HIM By HER, one of our three Outreach Ministry Partners, to share more about their mission and the impact of our giving. Stephen Ministry Training
Are you a person with a kind heart and a keen listening ear? At Christ Church Cathedral we can train you to be a Stephen Minister—to provide confidential, one-on-one support for people who are facing various stresses, such as loneliness, illness, separation or divorce, job loss, retirement, a new arrival or an empty nest, or just heightened anxiety during these trying times. Stephen Ministers model Christ’s love by being present with their care receivers—listening, empathizing, encouraging. Training will begin in early November and continue through April 2023. Classes are interactive and rewarding, imparting skills valuable in all human relationships. Commissioned care providers are then supported through regular, required supervision. A written application and interview are required. For more information, contact the Rev. Tom Kryder-Reid, Canon Pastor.
