God Meets Us in Thin Spaces

The Gospel lesson for this Sunday comes to us in the 17th chapter of Luke, where we continue this travel narrative with Jesus as he encounters people in unsuspecting places and they experience profound healing. In this particular passage, we witness the profound gratitude one of the 10 men with a skin disease had as a response to the healing he experienced from his encounter with Jesus.

In this borderland place, that is neither Galilee nor Samaria, we find a “thin place,” as Celtic Christians proclaim, where people encounter the mystery of God and find themselves participating in Jesus’ program of healing, usually amidst profound suffering, isolation, separation, and pain. This borderland transcends geographical location, however, and is a place of “psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us” says Chicana writer and activist Gloria Anzaldúa in Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza. I invite you to read the passage from Luke 17:11-19 out loud if possible. Listen for a word or phrase that arrests your attention. Savor that for a moment and then read the passage again. This time take a moment (consider setting a timer for two minutes) to think about how the passage is meeting you in this time and in this place in our common life together at Christ Church. Finally, read the passage one more time and spend another two minutes thinking about what God might be inviting you, or us, to do, be, or change in light of our theme for the season, “Deeper Roots.”

May God’s grace sustain you this weekend and meet us in the borderlands of scripture when we are together on Sunday.

“Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.”
—The Rev. Canon Jodi Baron

Deeper Roots

SUNDAY, OCT. 7, AFTER EACH SERVICE

During stewardship month, we’re reflecting on how we will deepen our roots in God’s love and hope by praying together, learning together, serving together, and giving together for the work of God’s Kingdom. Sunday, you’ll hear from newcomers and how CCC is shaping their spiritual life. We’ll also welcome Dayspring Center, one of our three Outreach Ministry Partners, to share more about their mission and the impact of our giving. Be sure to join us in the Parish Hall after each service to learn more about Dayspring Center and what is in store for our ongoing work together!

Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned out for our Dayspring Day of Service on Sept. 24! The staff and guests at Dayspring really appreciated our work painting rooms and serving lunch. Keep your eyes open for upcoming opportunities to work side-by-side with our ministry partners!
