The Secret to Sainthood
This Sunday, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints. Here’s the secret to sainthood: being a saint is not about being successful. Instead, being a saint is all about being faithful, about persevering even in the face of struggle, hardship, and challenge. This is a hard lesson to learn because everything in our culture and almost everyone in our lives pushes us to be a success. From the moment we take our first steps, we are taught to achieve, to meet and exceed other people’s expectations, and to perform at school or at work. We even make this mistake in the church, sometimes trying to run the church like a business rather than being the group of “unsuccessful” radicals God calls us to be.
Jesus, frankly, doesn’t expect or even want success from his saints. In Luke’s Gospel this Sunday, Jesus will tell us, in fact, that we are blessed if we are poor, mourning, meek, merciful, pure, peacemakers, persecuted, or reviled. (Try putting any one of those adjectives on a resume!) As saints, our call is to love our enemies, to give our time, talent, and treasure away to others, to reach out to those whom everyone else has written off, and we do this all expecting absolutely nothing in return from anyone. What God asks of us as saints is that we are faithful. Faithful doesn’t mean we will always do everything “right.” Faithful doesn’t mean we will never have moments of doubt or struggle. Faithful means that we keep the course, even in the grimmest of times and darkest of moments. Faithful means that we keep showing up, with and for each other and for our world, no matter what or how unsuccessful it all looks, to offer God’s hope, peace, and shalom to all.
