God is Relationship

As we prepare to celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend, I’m reminded that Roman Catholic monastic and modern-day theologian Richard Rohr teaches that at its core, the true doctrine of the Holy Trinity is about connection. The very essence of God “is relationship itself,” he says in The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation. (p. 44-47)

Our human temptation is always to think of the three persons of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) as independent and discrete beings, who function independently and in self-sufficient ways. But Rohr challenges that human way of thinking, saying: “Self-sufficiency makes God experience impossible! That’s why Jesus showed up in this world as a naked, vulnerable one, a defenseless baby lying in the place where animals eat. Talk about utter relationship! Naked vulnerability means I’m going to let you influence me; I’m going to allow you to change me. The Way of Jesus is an invitation to a Trinitarian way of living, loving, and relating—on earth as it is in the Godhead.”

If God is all about relationship, then the essence of our lives as God-followers, people who are on The Way of Jesus Christ, is also about relationship–relationships where we are vulnerable, real, and open to being changed and influenced by each other and with each other. This is hard work, and yet it is the work of God. May this Trinity Sunday show us the promise of God, and also enlighten and strengthen us to work even more to live in God’s perfect, interconnected image.

Indy Pride Festival 2022

SATURDAY, JUNE 11

The Diocese of Indianapolis once again will have a presence in the Indy Pride Parade on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis, and at the Pride Festival at Military Park. Volunteers are needed to march in the parade, staff the diocesan booth at the festival, or both. Registration is required to march in the parade or volunteer for a booth shift.

We’ll meet for a brief prayer service at the Chatham Arch pocket park at the corner of N. East and E. St. Clair Streets before proceeding to the diocese’s assigned parade marshaling station.

As of today, the forecast on Saturday is for sunny, mild weather. Dress accordingly, bearing in mind you are likely to be out in the sun for a long period of time. If you have a diocesan Pride t-shirt from the current or prior years, wear one! Otherwise wear a t-shirt representing your congregation if you have one. Bright, solid colors are preferred. Wear comfortable shoes. Sunscreen is recommended. Bring a bottle of water. Pocket-sized snacks are also a good idea!

Please contact Brendan O’Sullivan-Hale with questions.

It’s a Wrap! Joyful Noise 2022

CCC’s Joyful Noise camp had a triumphant return in 2022 with 29 campers! During the 7-day camp, kids learned music, including singing and playing the ukulele, and did arts and crafts in addition to visiting the Indiana State Museum, the Rhythm Discovery Center, Roller Cave, Action Duckpin Bowling, Tilt Studio Arcade, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

We are so very thankful to all the leaders/chaperones: Jenny Chalwick, Barb Alles, Melanie Wall, Nancy Reiter, Julie Martin, Amanda Gwin, Pat King, Colista Leiter, Nathan Wright, Ellie Thompson, Joselin Ramirez, Rev. Michael Landon, Chase Loomer, Julie Lynch, Diana Molinar, Rosanna Fernandez, Dan Ahlgren, Lilian Perez, Christine Smalley and Gabriel Fernandez. We are especially thankful for the leadership of CCC Director of Music Christopher Caruso-Lynch and Stephany Cohen. Without their diligent planning and enthusiasm, Joyful Noise would have been simply noise.

The 2023 Joyful Noise camp is tentatively scheduled for May 30-June 9. Come play with us!
