No One Is Beyond Reach
Our God is an awesome God—God has authority and power over elemental and spiritual forces and many a time, we cannot understand it. In the Gospel passage we’ll read this Sunday, the disciples saw it and were transformed, the demons saw it and were afraid, the demon possessed man was healed by it, and the town people saw it and did not know what to do with such power. Jesus comes to challenge and cast out every power that prevents us from living fully and freely as human beings created in God’s image. If we define “demons” as those forces which have captured us and prevented us from becoming what God intends us to be, we are as possessed by as many demons as those whom Jesus encountered. Our demons can be of many kinds: racism, poverty, mental illnesses, addictions, obsessions, destructive habits, etc.
Jesus was intentional in his crossing boundaries between the Jewish and Gentile regions just to give healing to this one man; that is, Jesus’ whole detour into this strange and unfamiliar place was to do just that, to rid this man of his demons and transform him from being “Legion of demons” to being a human being again, a beloved child of God. No one is beyond the reach of Christ’s redeeming and healing love.
—The Rev. Fatima Yakubu-Madus, Deacon
