Topsy-Turvy Teaching

About 10 years ago, several colleagues prevailed on me to enroll in the first two units of what’s best described as a self-actualization series. They’d found the program rewarding, personally and professionally, and were enthusiastic about it.

I was too, at first. The introductory unit was positive, supportive, enlightening. But the week-long second unit started off with a psychological beat-down that didn’t relent until day four, when the rebuilding finally began. I emerged cleansed by the catharsis, proud I’d not bailed, and wanting to believe my sense of self was strengthened. I was probably as armed as I’ll ever be to contend for myself in our crazy-competitive world.

Yet questions lingered—among them, whether Jesus would be enthusiastic about such “progress.”

This coming Sunday’s gospel suggests not. What you’ll hear is another of his world-inverting parables, this time about guests at a wedding banquet who put themselves first and presume to “the places of honor” (even at risk of disgrace and demotion) rather than “sit down at the lowest place” and by their selflessness merit invitation to “move up higher.” He asserts, “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Self-actualization on Jesus’ terms counters the ways of our crazy competitive world. Join us this or any Sunday, and for weekday worship and learning opportunities coming up, to find out more about his topsy-turvy program.

There’s always a place for you at this banquet.

If we are open to the gift of contemplation it may profoundly affect our daily life. Starting Sept. 6, there will now be two opportunities each week to join with others for Centering Prayer: Mondays at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom and Tuesdays at 5 p.m. at the church. Guidance will be offered for those new to Centering Prayer practice. Contact Michael Landon for more information.

What energizes you? What gives you fulfilment? How would you like to challenge yourself? Take some time to sit with these questions and then chat with ministry representatives on Sunday, Sept. 11, to learn which ministries are a good match for your passions.

Updates to Our Security Policy

Christ Church Cathedral is a spiritual hub of transformation for our city and diocese. Our unique location in the center of our city gives us the opportunity to be a space of deep peace in a troubled world, and we strive to be a safe place for all. You may have noticed over the last year, we have had the support of an outside security firm during our Sunday worship. We are grateful to them and how they have become beloved members of our CCC community.

In the wake of continued violence across the nation, CCC Vestry and staff have updated our security policy to include the following changes:

  • As of Aug. 14, the St. Francis Door is locked during services.
  • Accommodations have been made to ensure those who need to access the Cathedral from the wheelchair ramp will be able to do so.
  • CCC hired security guards, in uniform and who have received specialized training, may be armed while in the Cathedral.

If you have questions about our new policy, please know that our Wardens and staff welcome your feedback.

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP p.815)
