Rich Man, Lazarus, or Other?
Jesus tells the disciples and crowd of the parable where a diseased beggar is rewarded and a rich man is punished. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day and many in our day consider wealth to be proof of a person’s righteousness – God’s reward and approval. The rich man was not punished because he was rich but because of his hardened heart, lack of compassion for the poor and needy – Lazarus. The story of the rich man and Lazarus might be difficult for many North Americans, whose lifestyle stands in sharp contrast with a majority of people in the world who live on much, much less. Like so much else that Luke says about money and possessions, it stands as a stinging indictment not only of the great confidence we place in financial security, but also of the drastic inequities between the rich and the poor that we allow to perpetuate in our communities.
Many good expositions on this parable have invited us to identify with either Lazarus or with the rich man. Instead, I invite us to imagine that we are one of the rich man’s five living siblings and we have the power to rewrite the ending of this parable. Who do we condition ourselves not to see through the lens of Jesus’ life and ministry and what will each of us do as a result of this parable?
Through Christ, we are able and committed to sharing love and the good news of the gospel with those on the margin and oppressed. “To whom much is given, from him much is expected.” With the blessings God has granted to each of us comes a varying amount of responsibility and accountability.
—The Rev. Fatima Yakubu-Madus, Deacon
