Lent 2022: Into the Deep

As we enter the season of Lent together, we will deepen our practice and exploration of CCC’s new mission and the 5 pillars that hold up that work. Through prayer, liturgy, and meditation— be in community with us— and venture into this contemplative, foundational time in the liturgical year.

Shrove Tuesday Pancakes (on Sunday!) | Feb. 27 at 11:30 a.m.

Lent is right around the corner, which means it’s pancake season at Christ Church Cathedral! Come enjoy a simple pancake breakfast, prepared by our youth, with your CCC family. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve and clean! No experience necessary! Contact Anne Tordai at annet@cccindy.org. Pancakes are historically associated with Shrove Tuesday, the day preceding Lent, because they are a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

Ash Wednesday | Wednesday, Mar. 2

Ashes to Go | Don’t have a full hour to spend at church? Stop by one of three locations to receive the Ashes on the Go. This personal moment with one of our priests is available and open to all people.

Indoor Worship, Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes | Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. The season of Lent begins with this day of devotion where we prepare ourselves for new and contrite hearts. Holy Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes will be offered in English at 7 a.m. and 12:05 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., and in Spanish at 7:30 p.m.

Lenten Activities and Services

Book Discussion: “Be the Bridge: Pursuing God’s Heart for Racial Reconciliation” | Wednesdays from 6:30-8 p.m. beginning Mar. 16. “Be the Bridge: Pursuing God’s Heart for Racial Reconciliation” was written specifically for Christians wrestling with hard truths. This book discussion group, led by Tim Culbertson and Cynthia Madison, will challenge participants in a safe, supportive environment to examine how we may participate in perpetuating racial disparity and how we can participate in the transformative work of reconciliation. Attendees are asked to read the book in advance. Complimentary paperback copies are available at the church, or you can purchase a paperback or Kindle copy from Amazon. The group will meet at the Phoenix Theater Cultural Centre, which is located at 705 N, Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN 46204. Register here

Inscription of Catechumens | Sunday, Mar. 20 : Our Spring 2022 Class of Catechumens will be part-way through deepening their spiritual knowledge. Historically, Catechumens—those who “learn by hearing” and asking questions— underwent a time of disciplined study during the period of Lent. For some at CCC, Catechumenate leads to a new faith commitment, such as baptism or confirmation. Others use the opportunity to learn more about Christ Church Cathedral and become a member of our community. It is on this day that those who wish to state their intention to be a part of CCC’s membership, sign their name in our register and we send them into the rest of their studies with our communal blessings.

Morning of Walking Meditation | Saturday, Mar. 26 from 9 a.m.-Noon : The Rev. Cathy Scott, Deacon at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, will lead us in a series of walks around the neighborhood and meditations here in the Cathedral, with plenty of time for restful breaks and contemplation in between. As we live into our new congregational mission of glorifying God, serving our neighbors, and transforming our city, our quiet morning will invite us to see ourselves and our neighborhood with new eyes. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a jacket if you’re planning to walk with us.

Mothering Sunday | Sunday, Mar. 27 : Join us as we celebrate Mothering Sunday with a catered brunch together in the Parish Hall. Mothering Sunday always falls on the Fourth Sunday in Lent, 21 days before Easter Sunday. Traditionally practiced in England, this is a day of honoring mothers and visiting one’s local mother churches—the church in which they received the sacrament of baptism or Cathedral of the area . Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their ‘mother’ church. Mothering Sunday coincides with Laetare Sunday, also called Mid-Lent Sunday or Refreshment Sunday, a day of respite from fasting halfway through the penitential season of Lent.
