Christ Church Cathedral has been serving members of the community who need emergency assistance with their utility bill or rent so they call remain in their homes. This Basic Needs Program has been in existence for decades. Dedicated Cathedral staff have done superb work to keep this program as the only reliable assistance program to which Connect 2 Help 211 and area agencies could refer families on a weekly basis for this type of assistance.
This most recent staff coordination was one of our sextons, and also our Human Needs coordinator. Fred Andrews was the face of the Cathedral to the community each Tuesday morning for over ten years. When Fred went on medical leave in the Fall of 2017, the leadership at the Cathedral sought the assistance of the Outreach Team Ministry’s help to phase the program into a volunteer-driven program. After recruiting volunteers through parish communications, six parish members stepped forward. They have been the volunteers on Tuesdays who kept the Basic Needs program operational so that 145 households could receive assistance with their utilities or rent in the first quarter of 2018. We want to celebrate the individuals who are now the face of all parishioners as we work in areas of peace, justice, and celebrate the human dignity of each individual.
