For what are you grateful?

SUNDAY, OCT. 3 AT 11AM

This Sunday, we look forward to celebrating the kickoff of our Grateful Together, Giving Together, Growing Together Stewardship Season at Christ Church Cathedral. Please plan to join us for worship at either 8 a.m. in English or for our combined bilingual liturgy at 11 a.m. (Weather permitting, we will be on the lawn with delicious tamales afterwards. Bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket! If there is inclement weather, we will be in the Cathedral with tamales to-go after worship.)

For many churches, stewardship is just a cover word for “the annual pledge drive.” But here at Christ Church Cathedral, thanks to the generosity of several faithful and generous members who came before us, we have the unique opportunity to broaden our understanding of what stewardship is, grounding our own practices of generosity in gratitude for God’s many gifts and blessings. In her book Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks, author and sociologist Diana Butler-Bass writes: “Gratitude is the emotional response to the surprise of our very existence, to sensing that inner light and realizing the astonishing sacred, social, and scientific events that brought each one of us into being. We cry out like the psalmist, ‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made!’ (Psalm 139:14).” What happens when stewardship isn’t simply about a pledge drive, but rather, is more about our response to all of God’s amazing gifts and creation?

So, to begin our season of stewardship, I’ll ask you: For what are you grateful in your life? For what are you grateful in the life of Christ Church Cathedral? For fun: what color do you associate with your gratitude? We hope you will wear that color on Sunday and share why you’re grateful with a fellow parishioner as we enjoy time together. See you Sunday at 8 or 11!

—The Very Rev. Gray Lesesne, D.Min.

Stewardship Kick-off Event

SUNDAY, OCT. 3 AT 11AM

We will gather for a special bilingual worship service on the lawn at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration to kick off our 2022 Stewardship Campaign: Grateful Together, Giving Together, Growing Together. We will enjoy tamales while we share stories of how our gifts impact the community. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets!

Throughout the campaign, we’ll share more stories of our gratitude, connection, and mission. Bags containing special elements of our theme also will be distributed during our gathering on Oct. 3 so that you and your family can incorporate the practice of giving thanks into your daily rituals. Our 8 a.m. worship service is not affected by this special event, but because we cannot livestream outdoors at 11 a.m., we’ll offer brief 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. liturgies online that will be pre-recorded. If there is inclement weather, we will be in the Cathedral with tamales to-go after worship.

See you there!

Discern How God Is Calling You!

How is God calling you? What are the signs and ways God might be inviting you into something new? Do you face an important decision in your life where you could use some spiritual reflection and wisdom? As our Cathedral community continues in our discernment process and listens for God’s call for our next chapter of ministry together, we’re also discovering that discernment isn’t just for ministry committees or church strategic plans. God’s invitation and call is also to and for each of one of us.

We invite you to be a part of a two-gathering discussion and reflection on the book Listening Hearts: Discerning Call in Community, led by Dean Gray Lesesne and Discernment Team member Matthew Stevenson. We’ll meet on Zoom on Monday, Oct. 4 and on Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 7 to 8 p.m.
