Celebration of The Feast of Alexander Crummel
On Sunday, the church celebrates one of its first African American priests, Alexander Crummel, whose feast falls on Sept. 10 each year. The achievements of his ministry are myriad, as were the barriers he faced at every turn because of the color of his skin. As his entry in Lesser Feasts and Fasts records, “he was driven out of an academy in New Hampshire, dismissed as a candidate for Holy Orders in New York, and rejected for admittance to General Seminary. Ordained in 1844 as a priest in the Diocese of Massachusetts, he left for England after being excluded from participating in diocesan convention.” Of the many impacts Crummell had on the Episcopal Church, one of the most important was to serve as the first president of the Convocation of the Colored Clergy, which eventually morphed into the Union of Black Episcopalians, whose mission is “to remove racism from the Church and society and to stimulate the growth of black membership,” and who dedicate this Sunday as UBE Sunday to remember and highlight the work done, and the work left undone when it comes to racial justice and equity both in our church and our society.
The collect for Crummell’s feast, we pray that God would “Raise up, in this and every land, evangelists and heralds of your kingdom, that your church may proclaim the unsearchable riches of our Savior Jesus Christ.” How desperately we need heralds of God’s kingdom today, who proclaim the vision for a society where all people are truly equal and beloved. And how deeply do we need those unsearchable riches of our Savior, who calls us onwards to cast aside the works of darkness, the sin of racism and white supremacy which have so led our church astray. Let us pray for the intercession of Blessed Crummell, that we might be strengthened to face the legacy of racism, and plant new seeds of reparation and reconciliation that bloom into the beloved community which is that kingdom of God.

Celebrate CCC at the Fall Ministry Fair
SUNDAY, SEPT. 11, AT 11:30AM & 2:15PM
In recent years, it’s become more evident than ever that the church is more than the place where we worship: it’s the community that serves together and cares together. We invite you to (re)connect this fall at our Ministry Fair!
What energizes you? What gives you fulfilment? How would you like to challenge yourself? Take some time to sit with these questions and then chat with ministry representatives on Sunday, Sept. 11, to learn which ministries are a good match for your passions.
