Keeping Connected

All reports in scripture of Jesus’ appearances following his resurrection emphasize direct human interaction—such as this one from this Sunday’s gospel: “Jesus…said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” Yes, in that Jerusalem upper room on Easter night, and then a week later, the risen Christ greets anxious disciples, invites them to touch him, breathes God’s spirit upon them, and sends them out to bring God’s love to life for others by giving of themselves. Discipleship is always a matter of direct human interaction.

Well, almost always, as we’ve learned from two years of pandemic. But thanks be to God, to smart scientists, and to effective vaccines, direct human interaction is back for us at 125 Monument Circle (for now, at least, pending the vagaries of subvariants and case-counts). We worship and sing unmasked. We share the common cup at communion. Just gathering unencumbered feels like breathing the fresh air of the Spirit.

And yet, thanks be to God, to geeks, and to effective tech, virtual human interaction has kept us connected even during the loneliest days of lockdown, and in ways we hadn’t previously exploited. Online videocasting has extended worship’s reach beyond the borders of the state. Attendance at weekday services has quadrupled. And Zoom meetings, for all their limitations, have saved time, travel, and carbon particles.

Has the Holy Spirit continued breathing God’s life-giving love and creativity upon us amid unpredictable times?

Do not doubt but believe it. And join us this Sunday—in person or on your laptop—to feel the Spirit stirring us and connecting us still.

—The Rev. Canon Tom Kryder-Reid

Last Chance to Register! Racial Equity Workshop: A Groundwater Presentation

SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 9AM TO NOON

In this virtual webinar hosted by CCC, organizers from the Racial Equity Institute will use stories and data to present a perspective that racism is fundamentally structural in nature. The Groundwater metaphor is designed to help participants at all levels internalize the reality that we live in a racially structured society, and that that is what causes racial inequity. The metaphor is based on three observations:

  • racial inequity looks the same across systems,
  • socio-economic difference does not explain the racial inequity; and,
  • inequities are caused by systems, regardless of people’s culture or behavior.

Embracing these truths helps leaders confront the reality that all our systems, institutions, and outcomes emanate from the racial hierarchy, on which the United States was built. In other words, we have a “groundwater” problem, and we need “groundwater” solutions. Starting from there, we begin to unlock transformative change.
